Rojava has over 4 million inhabitants and as of January 2014 a social contract whose rhetoric of inclusion, sustainability, women’s liberation and alternatives to capitalism is parallel to grassroots work which is enacting these ideals. It was in 2013 that the leadership councils formally introduced the canton system whereby Rojava became constituted of three self-administering cantons, following a ‘Democratic Confederalist’ model based on Bookchin’s ‘Libertarian Municipalism’.
