Rollin on the River: Houseboats on Lake Union . Tucked into the middle of Seattle, just a few stone throws from the Space Needle, Lake Union shimmers like an emerald in the Queen Citys crown. Yet, in all the years Ive lived here, Id never had the chance to see this part of the city from the water, so when a friend asked me out on a day trip aboard his boat, I signed on. . These homes are on the east side of the lake, looking toward Capitol Hill. Technically, they are floating houses, and not houseboats, since generally they do not move under their own power. Once the houses are built, they are set on floats, towed to a spot on the lake and moored, more or less permanently. According to a Web site that describes the costs of owning a home on the lake (see link below), moorage fees range from $400 to $700 per month if you dont own your own slip outright. Moorage fees cover utilities like sewer and electricity. . The houses here are some of the swankiest on the lake. In a tour all the way round, I saw everything from stately ranch style homes to structures that were essentially floating shacks. If I go out on the lake a second time, perhaps Ill have some pix of those to show you.
