Rolling back the years yet again against Olympiakos, Ryan Giggs - TopicsExpress

Rolling back the years yet again against Olympiakos, Ryan Giggs showed David Moyes the extra quality in the middle of the park he needs to focus on bringing to the club in the summer transfer window. Playing in centre midfield, Giggs not only kept possession well but helped create both the penalty for the first and the ball for Rooney to create the second. He was calm, clever and was key to unlocking the Greek side’s sturdy defence in a very important game for the club . Many have been calling for a creative player in that central midfield role and many have probably also misunderstood what the fans were requesting. It doesn’t have to be someone who plays that final ball to create a goal but the one who starts attacks, puts dangerous players in the right parts of the pitch so they can create that bit of magic. It’s an issue that United have been struggling with for a while, with Paul Scholes briefly filling the void with his return but since then it’s been lacking. Moving Rooney to that position may happen as he gets older but it’s an issue that needs to be resolved sooner rather than later. Is Rakitic The Answer? There is plenty of talent out in Europe to fill that void, with varying degrees of possibilities and likely-hoods of actually signing them up. Players such as Arturo Vidal, Ilkay Gundogan, Ivan Rakitic, Ander Herrera and Toni Kroos would be ideal for their box-to-box attributes but they could be difficult to attract without Champions League football. Vidal is pretty much guaranteed to be out of United’s reach, Gundogan has injury problems but could be tempted by the wages as could Kroos, but he may be manoeuvring for a better deal with Bayern Munich. Ander Herrera would need to be convinced that the farce in January should be forgotten and out of that list, Rakitic might be the easiest to attract with Sevilla facing the possibility of no European football at all. Moyes needs to take that performance from Ryan Giggs last month and see that adding someone there could be a big lift to the club. Fellaini has improved and is a great option to have as well, but someone with the ability to start attacks as well as have the presence of mind to defend, would be invaluable to the way Manchester United want to play football. #MC
