Romania Revealed: Geopolitics and the Cult of Personality A lecture by historian and TV personality Dr Adrian Cioroianu, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, entitled Geopolitics and the Cult of Personality. This lecture will be chaired by Dr Balazs Apor, Director of the European Studies MPhil programme, Trinity College Dublin. With copious reference to communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, the talk explores the origins, features, and recurrent manifestations of the cult of personality as means of political suppression and mobilization in several communist regimes. A survey of the political, social and cultural implications of this grotesque exaltation of the leader’s glorified persona, the lecture also examines the reverberations and consequences of this mechanism of political control in international affairs. Dr Adrian Cioroianu is a Romanian historian, politician, journalist and essayist, Professor of History and Dean of the Faculty of History, University of Bucharest , and former Minister of Foreign Affairs. The event is part of Romania Cultural Days in Dublin, a month-long showcase of cultural events, typifying the best and latest in Romanian music, film, theatre, literature, visual arts and intellectual reflection organised by the Romanian Cultural Institute in London in partnership with the Embassy of Romania in Ireland, with the support of: Bulandra Theatre, Galateca Gallery, European Commission Representation in Ireland, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, The National Library of Ireland, Trinity Long Room Hub, Irish Film Institute, Project Arts Centre and The Mercantile.
