Romanias Klaus Iohannis sworn in as new president BUCHAREST, Dec 22 (PNA/Xinhua) -- Romanian President-elect Klaus Iohannis on Sunday took his presidential oath of office in front of the bicameral Parliament, promising to take his country to a stronger and brighter future. Today I stand here before you aware of the importance of this moment for the future of Romania. I am honored by the confidence that Romanian citizens have given me. Ill be the president of all Romanians, Iohannis addressed the plenary session of the Senate and the Deputies Chamber after the swearing-in ceremony. He stressed that he hopes, at the end of his term, Romania will become a place of a changed mind-set and of a different social climate, where people will have stability. The newly sworn-in president stressed that Romania cannot stay anymore the country of great expectations and paltry results, the country of squandered time and lost opportunities, and he wants to leave behind him a stronger and more united Romania and to show the Romanians that projects are being carried through. Meanwhile, he said in his inaugural address that the fight against corruption must be continued, because there is no other way for Romania than to achieve a corruption-free country, wishing that corruption would no longer be on the public agenda, at the end of his term. Iohannis, 55, is the first head of state in the eastern European country not to have emerged from the so called political elite. He ran for presidency under the banner of the center-right Christian Liberal Alliance and won 54.43 percent of the votes in the presidential runoff on Nov. 16, defeating his center-left rival, Social Democratic leader and incumbent Prime Minister Victor Ponta. After taking the oath as the new President of Romania, Iohannis will move into the Cotroceni Presidential Palace, where he will take over from the incumbent President, Traian Basescu, who already completed two tenures as head of state, starting in 2004. The Romanian president is elected every five years under the constitution, with a maximum of two consecutive terms allowed. (PNA/Xinhua) CTB/JSD
