Ron Merker, Owner of the Aquatic Center dive stores passed away. He was a SCUBA pioneer and one of my childhood heroes. Ron not only taught my mother and father to dive but taught me as well. We later went on to become sport diver pioneers together when we started diving the Northern Channel Islands in the early 70s. Ron Merker led the way and was the best free diver I ever saw... I remember sitting at about 50 feet with a full tank on my back.. Ron came kicking down from the surface on a lung full of air... passed me... and about 4 minutes later came kicking to the surface with a monster White Sea Bass in his arms... Truly one of the great Blue early California Divers... R.I.P. Ron Merker...
