Ronald T. Varney POND CREEK MARINE DIES IN VN ACTION Mr. and Mrs. Roland T. Varney, of Belfrey, Ky., were advised yesterday that their son, Lance Corporal Ronald T. Varney, U. S. Marine Corps, was killed February 24 (1969) near Da Nang in the Republic of Vietnam. He was 21 years old. Details were lacking but Cpl. Varney is reported to have suffered mortal head and chest woulds durng a Marine drive against hostile forces. The body is expected to arrive in Williamson within 10 days and will be received at the Rogers Funeral Home at Belfry. Cpl. Varney was employed at Alberts Army Store in Williamson prior to entering military service about a year ago. He had been serving in Vietnam about three months. Born June 25, 1947 at Belfry, he was a son of Roland T. Varney, an employee of the Eastern Coal Corp., and Mrs. Ida Murphy Varney, both of whom survive. He formerly attended Varney High School and in earlier years had been active in Boy and Cub Scouting, serving as a den chief for a Cub Scout unit. Surviving in addition to the parents are one brother, Danny Joe Varney, at home, and his grandmothers, Mrs. Columbia Lummy Murphy and Mrs. Vadie Varney, both of Belfry.
