Ronnie Dunstan Tribute Night Starts Labor Day Racing Harron, Maurer, Leppo, & Bieber Winners A stout Labor Day field of RTS Chassis sponsored 270 Sprints filled Lindas Speedway Friday in the Ronnie Dunstan Memorial Race. The field had drivers from five different states. The 24 car field was brought to the green flag by two time winner in 2014 Josh Stoyer. Stoyer held the race lead until the field reached half way. Out of a lap 12 caution flag Nick Skias shot to the outside of Stoyer and took the race lead. Tenth place starter Devin Harron also moved by Stoyer to the runner up spot as the 3 car slowed and retired to the pits. Skias and Harron drove away from the field to a sizable advantage. It looked like Skias was in a prime spot to win his fifth race of the year when his car slowed on the front stretch with five laps to go. Harron inherited the race lead. Lyle Stroman had his hands full holding off the hard charging Jason Swavely and Greg Miller and never challenged Harron. It was Harrons fifth win of the season giving him the most of any driver. Stroman held onto his second straight runner up finish. Swavely, Miller, and 19th place starter Kyle Weiss rounded out the top five. Brent Shearer locked down a career best sixth place finish with Mike Skias, 23rd place starting Jacob Hendershot, Josh Schaffer, and Kevin Berger the top ten finishers. Matt Jones came from North Carolina for the weekend and finished in 11th. Heat races for the 34 car field were won by Greg Miller, Ken Andreas, Jason Swavely, and Devin Harron. Consolation races were won by Kevin Berger and Randy West. Nick Skias came into the night as the point leader but lost some ground to the winner Devin Harron after his mechanical problem. Skias was credited with a 16th place finish. There are four point races remaining. If you have never been to Lindas Speedway for a Hoosier Tire Wingless 600 Sprint event, you need to make plans to see one. Friday night produced tight racing all night long. Steve Bull has run up front all year long in the Wingless Sprints, but that first win has eluded him. Bull lead early with Jesse Maurer trying to find a way around. Maurer kept the pressure on until he made the outside move around Bull on lap 11 for the lead. Maurer had about half a lap to catch his breath once out front before Jason Swavely got to second and began to work on Maurer. Bull remained in the thick of things along with Eddie Strada before Strada dropped out with mechanical issues. Swavely stayed right in Maurers tire tracks, but was never able to pull even with the 72. Maurer took the win, his second of the season in the Wingless 600 Sprints and third overall at Lindas Speedway in 600s. Steve Whary ran to a third place finish while Bull settled for fourth. Tony Dimattia rounds out the top five finishers. Bruce Ginther Jr came across in sixth to close out the race with Ernie Miles, Brett Michalski, Justin Schraden, and PJ Williams joining Ginther in the top ten. 32 of the Wingless warriors filled the pits with heat race victories going to Justin Schraden, Ernie Miles, Dan Jones, and Molly Chambers while Kayla Stoltzfus and Brett Michalski won consolation races. The Wingless drivers have next week off as the Winged 600s return to decide their championship battle. The Wingless Sprints are back Sept 12th and September 26th will mark the 1st Iron Cowboy event playing $500 to the winner. The Savage Hyundai Slingshots feature event kept the fans on the edge of their seats for the opening laps as Alex Schoffstall battled with Bj Antonio for the top spot. Schoffstall locked down the top spot off a double file restart. Schoffstall lead until a lap nine yellow flag. One lap shy of half way is noted because it again lined the field up double file. Brett Bieber pulled to Schoffstall inside on row one for the restart. Schoffstall was in the line that was preferred all night, but Bieber won the drag race to turn one and never looked back for his first win of the season. Bieber also closed up the gap in the points race with Justin Thompson finishing seventh. Schoffstall trailed Beiber across the line followed by Antonio, Travis Bieber, and Kyle Gruber. Dylan Hoch, Thompson, Slingshot Speedweek champion Larry Raifsnyder, Sam Scicchitano, and Louden Reimert were the top ten finishers. Amber Britto, Alex Schoffstall, and BJ Antonio were heat race winners for the 21 car field. Blaine Leppo of Spring Grove, PA won his first Keystone Legends main event of the season Friday night at Linda’s Speedway after a torrid battle with Jason Rochelle and Chris McKinney on a night to honor the first Keystone Legends Tour champion, Ronnie Dunstan. Blaine Leppo and Tim Bauer led the field to the main event green flag with Leppo assuming command. As the field exited turn four Bauer made contact with the leader, forcing him into a spin on the front straight. On the restart, Rochelle started outside the front row and used the high line to snatch the opening lap lead. Chris McKinney was right on Jason Rochelle’s bumper relegating Leppo to third as Tim Henry and Bob Stough rounded out the top five. Rochelle led the first seven laps before Leppo swept under both lead cars in turn four to lead lap eight. Rochelle battled back on the outside to reclaim the top spot on the ninth circuit, but Leppo was strong on the bottom and regained the lead at the halfway mark. On lap thirteen Travis McClellan took fourth from Tim Henry, completing a fine ninth to fourth run in his first Linda’s Speedway appearance. Leppo took the checkers ahead of Rochelle, McKinney, McClelland, and Tim Henry as Bob Stough, Scott Gobrecht, Tim Tomson, Brian Levan, and Clinton Penkauskas completed the top ten finishers. Leppo, Montgomery, and Rochelle won heat races for the 28-car field as Casey Earnst led the final feature qualifiers with a victory in the ‘B’ main event. The night to honor the 1994 Keystone Legends Tour champion, Ronnie Dunstan, attracted a stellar field including nine more former Tour champions, including Shaun Carrig (1996 and 1997), Brian Levan (1997), Jim Baker (2000), Tim Henry (2001, 2003, & 2008), Tim Tomson (2002 & 2006), Jason Rochelle (2004, 2005, 2009, & 2012), Tim Bauer (2010), Scott Houdeshell (2011), and Bill Diehl (2013). Many other former Tour drivers were in the pits and the evening provided an opportunity for the new guard to meet the old guard and learn more of the history of the past twenty-one years of Legend car racing in the Middle Atlantic states. Congratulations are in order for Chris McKinney, who parlayed two strong third place finishes to take the point championship over the rain-plagued 2014 mini-series at Linda’s Speedway. The Batz family and Lindas Speedway staff would like to thank all the fans, drivers, and crews that came out to support the Ronnie Dunstan Tribute Night. It turned into a beautiful night with many great memories made and shared. Ronnie Dunstan was honored for his over 300 career wins and countless championships. Next Friday Lindas Speedway will begin crowing champions. The Hoosier Tire Winged 600 Micro Sprint and 600 Modified champions will be decided. Also in action are the RTS Chassis sponsored 270 Micro Sprints, The Eashs Towing Chargers, and the Gutshall Automotive 125 Micro Sprints. Gates open at 5:30 and Racing starts at 7:30. Sunday September 7th will be a practice day open to any race car from 2-6pm. Remember to mark your calendars for the 19th of this month, September, as the Speedstrs return to Lindas Speedway in the Lebanon Valley Classic featuring Rich Toby Tobias, Kenny Brightbill, Billy Pauch, Frank Cozze, and more!
