Rookie Justin Melton continues to earn praise with stellar play for San Mig Coffee .Justin Melton has earned the nickname “Quickmelt” from his San Mig Super Coffee Mixers teammates because of his athleticism. And just like his namesake foodstuff, the rookie guard has gotten better with the heat turned up. For the second straight playoff game, Melton played excellent minutes off the bench for the Mixers. He followed up his career-high effort in the closing match of their quarterfinals series against Talk ‘N Text with another quality game in San Mig Coffee’s opening win over Barangay Ginebra San Miguel on Tuesday. Melton stole minutes from veteran stars James Yap and Peter June Simon, who had to watch from the bench as the rookie helped the Mixers rally back against Ginebra. Melton finished with eight points, including a crucial three-pointer that gave his team an 80-75 lead late in the match. After the game, San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone was once again all praises for his neophyte. “He hit that huge three-point shot and I thought that was a game-winner out there,” San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone. “I thought we’re gonna win it right there. He’s an extra guy who we can throw out there to add to our depth. We have a tendency to overplay James and PJ and then suddenly we can keep them thoroughly rested because we’re not afraid to go out there and throw Justin out there.” Melton’s versatility, according to Cone, also give him more options for his rotation. “Justin is versatile enough that he can play with Mark (Barroca), he can play with PJ, he can play with James. He doesn’t have to have the ball in his hands and be a pure point guard and he can defend different guys . He was defending (Mark) Caguioa, he was defending LA (Tenorio), (Emman) Monfort, so he has the versatility to do a lot of things,” said Cone.
