Room 236--Saw this good movie about Stanley Kubrick the other day. Six different takes on The Shining Kubricks films always seemed to let the critics down, and yet persist and become more respected over the years. Here some very sophisticated people are arguing that the movie was about the Holocaust, a fake moon landing and the oppression of the American Indians. The best reading in my view was that Kubrick was concerned with group protective self-delusion, how we turn away from ugliness to protect ourselves, at least until there is a shining that rubs our nose in it. To me this seems to work for all the Kubrick flics, from Paths of Glory to Eyes Wide Shut. If you have Netflix and are interested in coming to grips with Stanley Kubricks body of work, check it out.
