Roosevelt Mitchell III, M.Ed. has a vision of the world that differs from most people. Born with a disability, he struggled to allow his imagination to run wild while reading books as a child because none of the characters looked like him. I remember vividly growing up and not reading any books with characters that were like me and how that negatively affected my self-esteem, he said via a press release. Fast forward years later, now Mitchell works as an Elementary Special Education teacher. It was through his career that he noticed things hadnt changed. He found it increasingly difficult to find childrens books whose main character had a disability, and he also noticed it was especially challenging to find a disabled character of color. Instead of giving up hope, he channeled that disappointment into creating a revolutionary platform that challenges the way society reveres disabilities. Meet Kayden. He is Mitchells leading character in his new book entitled Kayden Is Different. Kayden, a little boy of color who has a disability, goes through many of the same hardships that many special needs students face today - bullying, teasing, and overall mistreatment. Mitchell understands why children without disabilities tease those with disabilities. Unfortunately children who do the bullying do not understand that those born ‘different are just like them, Mitchell said. Kayden is Different bridges that gap and creates awareness to the regular students about how to treat students with disabilities. He added that the book also aims to raise the self-esteem of students with disabilities and empowers them to develop heroic characteristics despite being different.
