Roots of jazz Although jazz emerged as a recognizable form around the turn of the 20th century in the southern United States, its roots extend backward over several centuries. It represents a synthesis of many cultural influences - both musical and nonmusical, religious and secular, African and European. The cruel fact In 1619, the British imported the first blacks to their colonies in Virgina. When African slaves were brought to the United States, they were not allowed to bring musical instruments. But they did bring their own musical tastes and ways of performing. African American cleverly - modified European church hymns, folk songs, and dance music to fit their own taste and traditions. Their children followed suit, and musical practices were thereby passed down from generation to generation.
