Rosemary Chicken: This is a dish from my childhood: my best friend’s parents leaning against their barbecue pit with wine glasses in their hands, squeezing lemons on the chicken breasts that are brushed with butter and garlic, rubbed with rosemary, sizzling over the oak coals. The front porch of their house is afloat in wisteria, and the California sun sinks behind the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. It’s a memory tinged in gold and rosemary, and I have worked at recreating it in the oven so I can take myself back there, if just for a moment, if just for the cool air sifting through the cascades of lavender wisteria and the late sunlight, if just for the taste of lemons and garlic, of rosemary and butter.
