Rosol Wins Close Contest; Tomic Advances: Eighth seed Lukas Rosol survived a close first-round contest on Tuesday, edging Lukasz Kubot 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(2) at the Thailand Open in Bangkok. The Czech fired 16 aces in response to 14 from Kubot and won 71 per cent of his service points. Rosol is making his debut in Bangkok, bidding to win his second ATP World Tour title. The 28 year old won his maiden trophy earlier this year at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest (d. Garcia-Lopez). Top seed Tomas Berdych will open his campaign against Roberto Bautista Agut after the Spaniard defeated qualifier Marco Chiudinelli 7-5, 7-6(2) in one hour and 50 minutes. Bautista Agut goes into the second-round match with the confidence of having beaten Berdych earlier this year at the Aircel Chennai Open quarter-finals. The Slovakian dismissed qualifier Alejandro Falla 6-3, 6-2 in less than an hour. Second-seeded Gasquet is coming off a US Open semi-final performance (l. to Nadal) and is looking to retain the title he won with victory over Gilles Simon in the 2012 finale. Japanese qualifier Go Soeda earned a second-round clash with sixth seed Feliciano Lopez after coming from a set down to beat Santiago Giraldo 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in 86 minutes. Third seed Milos Raonic will face Marinko Matosevic in the first round after the Australian dismissed wild card Wishaya Trongcharoenchaik 6-1, 6-1 in 43 minutes. Matosevic has a 1-1 FedEx ATP Head2Head record with Raonic, having beaten the Canadian in their last meeting at the Citi Open in August. Bernard Tomic advanced when Ivo Karlovic was forced to retire in their first-round contest. Tomic was leading 6-7(3), 6-4, 4-2 when Karlovic retired with a back injury. Tomic, champion at the Apia International Sydney at the start of the year, is looking to reach his fourth quarter-final of the season. Murray/Peers Open Bid Third seeds Jamie Murray and John Peers shook off the disappointment of a first-round exit in Metz last week by beating Nicholas Monroe and Simon Stadler 7-6(6), 6-4 in their Bangkok opener. The British/Australian duo are looking to win their third ATP World Tour title of the season, following victories in Gstaad (d. Andujar/Garcia-Lopez) and Houston (d. Bryans). Top seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Robert Lindstedt were upset, falling 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 to Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Paolo Lorenzi.
