Rotating stock: The time has come to replace my bear repellent, - TopicsExpress

Rotating stock: The time has come to replace my bear repellent, which also means its time for a little practice. This particular product is the 8.1 ounce high pressure canister, Counter Assault, manufactured by Bushwhacker Backpack & Supply Co. It cost about $30 at The Sportsmans Warehouse. Canister states that the useful range is up to 30, and that the spray will last for approximately 7 seconds. The canister does not indicate an expiration date. But general experience with pressurized canisters tells me it does have a limited life for maximum effectiveness; I bought this one 3 years ago. I set up a large bucket --like an old scrub bucket, about 24 in diameter-- on its side, 4 above ground, taped a balloon inside at its center, backed off to 25, set my watch, crudely aimed from about chest high, and let er rip. The second I squeezed the trigger I began walking sideways so I could feel what it was like to hit a target while moving. I was exactly on target. Immediately the balloon burst from the strength of the stream which was loudly hitting the bottom of the bucket. I held the trigger for 3 seconds, disengaged, moved back another 5, then squatted down and refired. The stream again was equally as strong and the canister is actually very predicable in its aim. I got 5 more seconds of a solid, strong stream. I have no doubt I could have killed the balloon at more than 35. Instructions were simple and easy to understand, the shape and construction of the head and trigger make it easy to use. One feature I liked is that the safety tab glows in the dark. There is safety string that holds it in place, but it stretches for ease of quick use and when I armed the canister the safety tab was quickly out of the way without having to cut the string. The test went so well I will be buying the same exact product and marking it for replacement in four years.
