Rotten Cheese and a New Suit Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Luke 6:37-38 The book tells the story of Pastor Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand and their son, Mihai. In the excerpt, Mihai tells about their life in Romania in the mid-20th century. During these times, there was a man who was very poor. Many others in Romania were even worse off than he was. He often saw beggars begging for food. Every morning, his parents let him crawl in bed with them. His Father often told him stories. One day the man’s father told him about a woman and a beggar: A long time ago, a poor beggar asked a woman for food, and she gave the poor man rotten cheese. Later the woman went to heaven. She saw Abraham and Isaac and many others sitting at a table for a fine banquet. An angel showed her to a small table in a corner of the banquet hall. “You may eat here,” the angel said. The only food on the table was rotten cheese.Of course, it wasn’t a true story. But it stuck in the man’s mind. He remembered it during family devotions when he studied Luke 3:11: “He who has two clothing, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.” Father had only one suit to wear to church. The suit became old and frayed, but he still wore it. The man knew a missionary who had gone back to his home in Norway for a visit. When he returned to Romania, he brought the man’s father some cloth for a new suit! He watched as his father stood at the mirror in his new clothes, enjoying the tailor’s fine work. He thought of the Bible verse about the tunics.“Father,” He said, “now you can give one of your suits to Brother Jon at the church. He doesn’t have a suit. And the clothes he does have are torn and ragged.” Father stopped admiring the suit in the mirror and turned to him. “Which suit should I give him, Mihai?” the father asked. “The one you want to wear in heaven,” He answered, remembering the woman who had nothing but rotten cheese to eat. Father went to the phone and called Brother Jon. He came over and got his new suit in less than an hour. Later, Father said it was a hard decision to give up his fine new suit. But at the time, he made it look easy to share. The man felt very proud of his father.
