Rough couple of days.... Our 15 year old dog Xena is sick. Shes old but generally perky. Lethargic and in pain the last week. This makes my Mom worried....and that doesnt help with the fact that....see next paragraph. Mom is still having issues that seem to have started from our trip up to the cabin on the 4th of July (may have just been a trigger). She has been on some pretty heavy antibiotics and these have made her very sore and she has major swelling (and she already had a lot) in her lower extremities. She also has sores popping up on her legs and because shes on blood thinners (stroke prevention) shes bleeding a lot. She has nurses, wound care specialists, a PCA, and others....but they come every couple days. Shes just not able to get the attention she needs at home so the unfortunate discussion of going to the hospital or another rehab center keeps coming up. I know no one wants to be in a home but right now shes actually quite a bit worse from when she came home from the rehab the first time and I only see her sliding more. Its a sucky discussion to have with your parent, as to many its a direct threat to their freedom and independence. Even the thought of going to a place like that and the possibility of never seeing your home again unless its to visit is horrifying. I understand that. I write this to mentally prepare some of you out there, parents and children alike, that this happens to many and the time to discuss the issue is now, when its not an emergency. It wont make it any easier to accept when the time comes but at least, hopefully, there wont be as much of a stigma around it. On top of that were out of money, the car engine light went on again for the 3rd time in as many months (last time they said the NEXT time could cost $500+), and I have the pains associated with pre-kidney stone movement (once youve had more than one you start to notice the warning signs). Ive had a couple other friends express the same sentiment....but 2014 can eat a bowl of big ones right now. That said, you cant give up. You need to identify the problems you can fix and work towards fixing them. The problems you cant? You need to accept you cant and adjust your life accordingly.
