Round 1 - Scotty Jennie Lawson Pennington Before I introduce my argument I would like to say that I am the Con in this debate and Michael Maymoun is Pro. Pro being for the resolution and Con being against. Resolution: Yeshsua is not Jesus Christ of Nazareth There are three points I need to establish to refute this resolution. First, establishing that God is not superficial in allowing each language to speak His Sons name in their tongue. Then second should be showing the multilingual meaning of Yeshsua. Third and lastly is showing Jesus Christ of Nazareth is in fact the Messiah prophecsied in Hebrew scripture. By establishing these three contentions it should be clear that Jesus Christ of Nazareth is indeed Yeshua the Messiah. Contention 1) God is not superficial In Leviticus 22:32 God says, Neither shall ye profane my holy name. In Exodus 6:3 we are given Gods name, And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name Jehovah was I not known to them. God further says in Psalm 83:18, That men may know that thou, whose name alone is Jehovah, art the most high over all the earth. Let us notice that God specifically used the names of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob previously but here in Psalm David says that Men may know establishing that all men may know Gods name. Now all men are not Hebrew and hence do not speak Hebrew. Therefore, if all men are to know Gods name then men must speak His name in their own language as also written by David in Psalm 19:3. This goes to show us that God Almighty has declared that all men know his name and he made no distinction between language barriers. If the Almighty God made it clear that men should know His name, created the different languages in Genesis 11:9 and made no distinct language known in which His name should be glorified, then it is only logical that all men must glorify God in their specific language in whatever way their language pronounces it. In Mark 16:15 scripture says, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Now here if the gospel of Mark be of the Messiah then the Messiah has declared for His believers to go and teach all nations His gospel. Well how can His believers teach all nations if they only speak about Him in Hebrew? Well Acts 2:6 says, Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. Scripture declares that the apostles were given gifts of speaking to each person in their own tongue so they could understand the gospel of the Messiah. We see that God has pronounced that all men know His name, know about the Messiah by the gospel, dispersed languages of men and has given no specific language in which to call upon Him or worship Him. In fact we see in Acts the ability given to the apostles to speak in other languages so they would know about the Messiah thru the gospel. I think this establishes that God is not superficial in what language we use to call upon Him or the Messiah. Contention 2) Meaning of Yeshua My opponent has no issue with the name Yeshua so my case hinges on showing that Yeshua the Messiah is in fact the same as the English known Jesus of Nazareth. During the second Temple period, Yeshua first became a known form of the name Yehoshua. The Hebrew spelling Yeshua (ישוע) appears in some later books of the Hebrew Bible. Yeshua was a common alternative form of the name Yehoshuah = Joshua. In English the name Yeshua is extensively used by Christian denominations who use what they consider the Hebrew or Aramaic name of Jesus. The English name Jesus derives from the Late Latin name Iesus, which transliterates the Koine Greek name Ἰησοῦς Iēsoûs. While the possibility remains that Jesus had a formal name Yehoshua, Yeshua` in Greek it was pronounced Iesus and in English Jesus. The Hebrew spelling Yeshu (ישו) refer to Jesus of Nazareth, though the Hebrew spelling Yeshua (ישוע) is generally used in and used by Hebrew speaking Christians in Israel. Thus, both the full form Yehoshua and the abbreviated form Yeshua, were in use during the Gospel period and in relation to the person known by English tongue as Jesus of Nazareth. Contention 3) Jesus Christ of Nazareth is in fact the Messiah prophecsied in Hebrew scripture. Jesus of Nazareth is the central figure of Christianity, whom the teachings of most Christian denominations hold to be the Son of God. Christianity holds Jesus to be the awaited Messiah of the Old Testament and refers to him as Jesus Christ. Virtually all modern scholars of antiquity agree that a historical Jesus existed, although there is little agreement on the reliability of the gospel narratives and their assertions of his divinity. Most scholars agree that Jesus was a Jewish preacher from Galilee, was baptized by John the Baptist, and was crucified in Jerusalem on the orders of the Roman prefect, Pontius Pilate which all relate to the New Testament gospels. The English recorded Jesus of Nazareth fulfiiled the following 15 prophecies(and hundreds more): 1. Gen 5:24 - The bodily ascension to heaven illustrated - Mark 16:19 2. Gen. 14:18 - A priest after the order of Melchizedek - Hebrews 6:20 3. Gen 14:18 - The Last Supper foreshadowed - Matthew 26:26-29 4. Gen. 22:8 - The Lamb of God promised - John 1:29 5. Gen. 25:2-5 - The Seed of Isaac promised as the Redeemer - Hebrews 11:18 6. Ex. 12:5 - A Lamb without blemish - Hebrews 9:14; 1Peter 1:19 7. Ex. 12:13 - The blood of the Lamb saves from wrath - Romans 5:8 8. Lev. 17:11 - It is the blood that makes atonement - Rom. 3:23-24; 1John 1:7 9. Deut. 18:18 - Sent by the Father to speak His word - John 8:28, 29 10. Ruth 4:4-10 - Christ, our kinsman, has redeemed us - Ephesians 1:3-7 11. 2 Sam. 7:12 - Davids Seed - Luke 3 12. Job 9:32-33 - Mediator between man and God - 1 Timothy 2:5 13. Psa. 2:2 - To own the title, Anointed (Christ) - John 1:41, Acts 2:36 14. Psa. 31:11 - His acquaintances fled from Him - Mark 14:50 15. Mal. 3:1 - Messenger of the new covenant - Luke 4:43 There are many more(over 300 more) fulfilled prophecies that could be brought up here but for time and character space I think this will suffice. I have shown here that God has no superficial boundaries in which we must call His name nor the Messiahs name in its Hebrew form. On the contrary we have seen that God and Jesus Christ sent men to learn about them in whatever language they spoke. As we seen in Acts the gift of speaking unknown tongues to convey the message of the gospel. We also have seen that the name Yeshua is used alot and is in fact the Hebrew name of the gospel Messiah in which translated into Greek(note: Greek was spoken in the time of Jesus and was used as much as Hebrew, Israel was ruled over by Rome indeed) is Iesus which translated into English is Jesus. I doubt any contention that Christ or Messiah will be contended and if either are then the above contradictions my be tackled which use such terms. Finally I have offered 15 prophecies fulfilled by the gospel recorded Jesus of Nazareth. This holds that the man recorded in the gospel tradition is the Hebrew foretold Messiah. All three contentions together hold huge weights in the truth of my case that Jesus Christ of Nazareth is indeed Yeshua and is the prophecised Messiah recorded in Hebrew Old Testament scripture.
