Round #3 Player of the Week: Damian Martin It’s the game that made headlines around the world, however Damian Martin has still managed to steal the spotlight and earn a Player of the Week nod thanks to his stellar performance on Friday night. Taking out 38 per cent of the fan votes, Damian Martin beat out Cairns Taipans player Scottie Wilbekin who came close to getting his second POTW award with 34 per cent. Damian Martin inspired the Perth Wildcats to the 84-63 over the Sydney Kings in Round 3, registering a career-best of nine steals, nine rebounds and eight assists. He closed in on what would have been a remarkable triple-double and he could have got closer to double-figures in points too, had he not narrowly missed three lay-ups to finish with two points. The four-time NBL Defensive Player of the Year is strengthening claims he is the best defender the NBL has ever seen, but maintains it is always a team effort. “I’ve got Jesse (Wagstaff) and Shawn (Redhage) who come and pressure the basketball with me so a lot of the credit deserves to go to those guys event though I get the steals,” said Martin. The Perth Wildcats currently sit second on the NBL ladder with a 2-1 record, with their only loss against the New Zealand Breakers still fresh in the mind. The first game of the season was one of the more embarrassing performances that I’ve been part of for a long time,” he said. “In that game, we were playing half-court defence and that’s not us. “Now we are picking the ball up 90-feet, I’m on the ball and then you have the big men there to help so that I can gamble a little bit. That goes a long way to us getting into a flow, and some easy baskets stem from our defensive stops.” Damian Martin and the Perth Wildcats have their first away game of the season this Friday at the WIN Entertainment Centre against the Wollongong Hawks. Watch on ONE HD this Friday at 9:30pm or on NBL.tv.
