Round of the Week – Ryan Stephenson wins Gold Cup The Invincibles Annual Junior Presentation Dinner was held on Sunday Night 7th December, following the final event of the year, The Invincibles Sunshine Coast Gold Cup of Cups Championship at Peregian Springs. Our Junior boys were prominent on the night claiming a host of awards and prizes. The final, and perhaps biggest, award of the night, went to Ryan Stephenson for winning the Invincibles Sunshine Coast Gold Cup of Cups Championship. Ryan won his first ever major event, showing poise under pressure to claim the win by one shot from five other competitors in “one of the tightest and hard fought finishes ever recorded”. Ryan finished on 68, closely followed by fellow Mt Coolum junior member and team mate Zac Quirk and Steven Cox (Wantima) coming in one shot back on 69. And just one shot further back from them on 70 was Joshua Horswill (Royal Queensland) and Jordan Speare (Pelican Waters), creating an “extremely close and very exciting affair” with the Top 5 separated by only two strokes. Ryan’s father Andrew Stephenson was in attendance watching Ryan on Sunday during the Championship and was quietly confident, admitting to Graeme Miller (who runs The Invincibles Tour program) that Ryan was a good shot at winning the event after Ryan had played the first nine holes. And Andrew was proud as punch, even showing a bit of emotion on Sunday Night, when Ryan was presented with Trophy. Each week it seems we could write a Round of the Week about Lochie Coleborn, Ryan or one of our other very talented Juniors. And with good reason too, as our current crop of Juniors are sweeping almost every award and team event on the Invicibles Tour Calendar, leading to the Mt Coolum team being labelled as “the very powerful and proud Mount Coolum Golf Club”. The talent among our Juniors is highlighted by our boys easily winning the 2014 Invincibles Sunshine Coast Inter–Club Team Shield, which was presented on Sunday Night at the Presentation Dinner. As we mentioned in last week’s post about Lochie - ?insert hyperlink? – our Junior Boys had dominated the other local clubs to secure this title in November with a round still to be played. Ryan’s win in the Gold Cup of Cups title emphasised the fact that it was a team effort from the boys, as Ryan ensured the Mt Coolum Golf Club claimed The Invincibles Sunshine Coast Gold Cup of Cups Championship for an unprecedented fourth consecutive year, following wins by his junior team mates Jared Barr (2011), Zac Quirk (2012) and Lochie Coleborn (2013). So a massive congratulations to Ryan for winning what we hope will be the first of many major events and golfing awards. Congratulations also to the rest of our Junior boys who helped secure the team shield, and ensure that Mt Coolum is seen as one of the most dominate junior Clubs in the district.
