Roundtable Invitation: Criminalization of Dissent in Bahrain, - TopicsExpress

Roundtable Invitation: Criminalization of Dissent in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE Six leading human rights NGOs invite you to a discussion on human rights violations by Gulf countries that are US partners in the fight against ISIS. Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates routinely jail those who advocate democratic reform and protection of human rights, while ignoring or encouraging those who promote violence and sectarianism. Join us to discuss how US policy can address the roots of extremism in the Gulf and the policies of its Gulf allies that criminalize peaceful dissent and persecute human rights defenders - including the recent jailing in Bahrain of Nabeel Rajab on charges of “insulting state institutions” via Twitter. Participants will present ideas on how to promote US policies that can address the crisis presented by ISIS in the region and counter the repression of dissent by many Gulf states. Speakers include Nabeel Rajab, President of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (via Skype), Maryam Al-Khawaja, Co-Director of the Gulf Center for Human Rights (GCHR), Brian Dooley, director of the Human Rights Defenders program at Human Rights First, British lawyer Melanie Gingell, and GCHR Co-Director Khalid Ibrahim. Joe Stork, deputy director of Human Rights Watchs MENA division, will moderate the event. Date: Friday, November 14 at 10:30am-12:00pm Light refreshments and coffee will be available starting at 10 am.
