Roundup of Nawettans in Serekunda East, Bakau Africa » Gambia Thursday, September 26, 2013 The summer football jamboree locally referred to as Nawettan continues to gather pace in the Gambia Football Federation recognised centers across the Greater Banjul Area and some parts of the Kombos. But while Brikama has completed the group stages of the league proper and well into the first round of their knockout competition, the likes of Serekunda East and Bakau are equally at the closing stages of the opening rounds. Here we round up some of the major highlights of the two latter Nawettan zones so far in their respective competitions. At the Serekunda East Mini-Stadium on Tuesday, Latrikunda United secured a 1-0 defeat of Medina FC of Tallinding. Samba Leigh’s 65th minute goal was the only difference between the two sides, a result that left Medina coach Ansumana Jallow raging at the performance of his players. His opposite number Lamin Demba rejoiced at securing yet another win after three matches. However, Demba who in the past guided Macassa to one of their best runs in terms of winning trophies warned his players against complacency. Elsewhere at the Serekunda East Nawettan competition, Bantaba of Fajikunda and Latrikunda’s Macassa drew blanks in a goalless stalemate last week. Bantaba dominated the game especially in the second half when they scored a goal that was disallowed by the referee. Speaking to Observer Sports reporters shortly after the game, Macassa coach Alieu Secka said he was delighted with the outcome of the match. For his part, his counterpart on the bench for Bantaba, Pa Babou Mboob said he was disappointed not to have won the game. Six & One thrash Linguere in Bakau But while goals are becoming hard to come by at Serekunda East, there was no such scenario in Bakau at least if the match between Six & One FC and Linguere is anything to go by. The former thrashed the latter 4-1 in a game played at the community’s Mini Stadium a couple of weeks ago. Linguere got off to the worst possible start when defender Abou Drammeh headed into his own net just seconds into the match. Drammeh’s evening would turn even sourer when he gave away a penalty duly converted by Lamin Jatta in the 41st minute for a 2-0 halftime lead. Lamin Bojang scored a third from a free kick in the 66th minute before Omar Dibba compounded their misery with a fourth goal three minutes later. There was still time for Linguere to pull a goal back when Abubacarr Jawara scored a consolation in the 81st minute. Speaking to the Daily Observer, the head coach of Six & One FC, Ousainou Touray hailed the performance of his players. Elsewhere in Bakau, Babanding Sama scored a stoppage time winner as Vidar beat Katchikally United 1-0. Following a barren first half, both sides failed to convert the several chances accorded to them but Sama’s wonderful skills proved decisive when he beat two players to slot home the winner in the 89th minute. Vidar FC coach Adna Mousa said the win was as a result of his side being able to learn from an earlier mistake they made in conceding defeat in their opening game. “I am very happy about the victory and hopeful that my team will emerge victorious at the end of the league,” he added. Julangel also beat Apex with a similar scoreline. But with Vidar leaving it late before deciding the outcome of the game, Julangel scored in the 73rd minute courtesy of Yankuba Drammeh following a goalless first half. Batangkoto also secured a 1-0 defeat of 10-man Magadan FC in a fiercely contested derby at the Bakau Mini-Stadium. Magadan FC dominated the opening exchanges of the first half but the two teams went into the break deadlocked. But just three minutes into the second half, Batangkoto had a glorious chance to open the scores and Ousman Manneh delightfully tucked home a Lamin Camara pass for a 1-0 win. Magadan’s misery was compounded when Ebrima Sonko was sent off in the closing stages for stamping on an opposing player. Having secured a last gasp win in the previous game, Vidar came into their latest encounter with Vietnam Border booming with confidence but it was the latter that went home joyous after securing a 2-0 win. Musa Touray was the hero on the night when he scored a goal either side of the break to secure his side all three points. He opened the score to give Vietnam the lead right on stroke of the half hour mark before his 72nd minute effort sealed the win. Speaking to the Daily Observer after the game, the head coach of Vietnam Border said he was not surprised with the scoreline and the performance of his players despite their underdog tag coming into the game.
