Rourkela meet should focus on effective use of RTI for better results in 2014 Lok Sabha-Odisha Assembly poll Dear all, Greetings. The three day convention on Right to Information (RTI) scheduled to be held next week in Rourkela is very timely. It is being organized at such a time when the country is going to face general election any time before or by April, 2014. The state Assembly poll is also likely to take place along with the Lok Sabha poll. Hence, we all need to gear up to meet the demand of the situation. Janata Vikas Manch (JVM) is of the opinion that the information available on the performance of the political leadership including MPs, MLAs and ministers is very poor. The RTI activists can use RTI as a tool to dig out all the information related to the MPs, MLAs and government. The RTI convention can focus on follow things: 1. How to use RTI in evaluating the performance of MPs and MLAs. 2. How to use RTI in evaluating the participation of MPs and MLAs in Parliament and Odisha Assembly respectively. 3. How to use RTI in assessing the developmental work in the districts of the backward region – Western Odisha, Southern Odisha and Tribal districts. 4. How to use RTI to get information on the use of MP LAD and MLA LAD. 5. How to use RTI to get information on the funds allocated for the SCs and STs development. 5. How to use RTI in all other sectors of development. There are reports of attack on the RTI activists who are using this tool to dig out information in Odisah. Hence, it needs to discussed the ways and means to protect the RTI activists in the state. Another important issue is how to convey the available information to the people. The RTI activists should be educated on how to interact with media and convey the information to the people through them. JVM requests the organizers and participants in this convention to focus on the use of RTI in strengthening democratic and electoral process to make the governance effective in Odisha. We hope this RTI Convention is oriented towards 2014 Lok Sabha and Odisha Assembly polls and the RTI activists of the state will work towards this direction. It will also create awareness among voters to cast their vote very carefully and elect the right candidate for the Parliament and Odisha Assembly. JVM extends its whole hearted support to the organizers and all the RTI activists participating in this convention. We also wish a grand success for this RTI convention.
