Rowboat anyone? By Theresa Goodine All too often in our lives we find ourselves in situations that we just can’t see our way through. In reality this isn’t such a big deal because we serve an all-knowing, all-seeing, ever-present God, who is faithful and willing to save…if we let Him! IT IS WRITTEN: The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. Zephaniah 3:17 NIV There’s a story I remembering hearing. There was a man caught in a flood who had been stranded on a rooftop. When a rowboat came by and asked if he needed help he replied, “No, God will help me, no harm will come to me.” The boat continued on. Another story was of a woman who, as a test of faith jumped off a building. She believed that God would not let her come to harm. She wouldn’t heed the warnings of everyone around her telling her to stop. In the stories, God was trying to rescue these people but they wouldn’t let Him. He gives us freedom to choose, and many of us do not use that freedom wisely. There have been times in my life when I needed someone to literally take me by the hand and lead me to safety. Had I not let them I would have been lost. IT IS WRITTEN: First pride, then the crash— the bigger the ego, the harder the fall. Proverbs 16:18 MSG Many times the reason we don’t reach out for that helping hand God provides is our sense of pride. During one Sunday service I felt God asking me to kneel before the alter. I tried to reason it out by thinking, “I’ll kneel at my seat.” or “No one else is, what they will think, that I need help!” What I heard in my spirit was, “You won’t humble yourself before me.” Immediately, I ran up to the alter and fell to my knees. In His own way God was letting me know in order to receive I had to humble myself before Him. I always tell my kids that with God you don’t fail any tests; you get to repeat it over and over until you get it right. I don’t want to fail any more tests. Life is hard enough without repeating the same trials over and over until I respond correctly. God does not bring on those trials but He allows them into our lives through our own choices so we can grow in wisdom and humility. It’s not until we realize how weak we are that we understand and appreciate how strong His outstretched hand truly is. Don’t let lifesaving rowboats pass you by while you drown in your own pride.
