Roy H. Hunt served as the 1939-40 Kentucky FFA President and as one of the National FFA Vice Presidents in 1940-41. But this was just the beginning of Mr. Hunts real service. Less than a month after he stepped down as a National FFA Officer, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Thanks to a special program with the Navy he was able to complete his degree in agriculture from the University of Kentucky before attending Officer Training School at Columbia University. He was eventually assigned to the USS New Mexico as a radar operator as part of the Pacific fleet. The shipped was attacked by kamikazes twice and in one attack Mr. Hunt was lucky to escape injury or death- 54 of his shipmates were not so fortunate. On September 2, 1945 Mr. Hunt was onboard the New Mexico in Tokyo Harbor to witness the Japanese surrender. Following the war, Mr. Hunt joined his father in a Case equipment dealership in Louisville. Through hard work and the leadership skills he learned through FFA, Mr. Hunt built Hunt Tractor Company into one of the larger Case dealerships in the nation. Today Mr. Hunt lives in Louisville and remains active in his church and community. He recently was able to participate in an honor flight to Washington DC to see the World War II Memorial with other World War II veterans. Roy Hunt is one of thousands of FFA members who have fought to protect the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. This July 4th, please join us in recognizing the service and sacrifice of these great Americans.
