Sampdoria’s pursuit of the 33-year-old was initially a noisy distraction but it quickly developed into something dogged and then desperately lacking in class. When Everton FC made it clear that they wanted to keep hold of Eto’o the Italian club didn’t like it. They threw their toys out of the pram, stamped their feet and some high-ranking officials gave interviews that were not befitting of their status at such a club. And whereas Roberto Martinez and Everton don’t like doing it, Sampdoria were more than happy to talk about a player that wasn’t theirs, but one they wanted to be. It has been a very public courting of Eto’o. The Blues, as is their right, refused to give up on losing the three-time Champions League winner but for some reason Sampdoria didn’t expect it.
