Royal Dutch Shell, the oil corp responsible for 2 massive oil spills that devastated a small Nigerian community more than 6 yrs ago, has agreed to an unprecedented $84M settlement w/ residents of the Bodo fishing village—an amt locals fear wont go far enough to repair ecological & economic damage wrought by leaking pipelines & pollution. As a result of the settlement, announced Wed, each member of the community—which sits amidst mangrove swamps, creeks, & channels that are the perfect breeding ground for life-sustaining fish & shellfish—will each receive about 600,000 Nigerian Naira (US$3,327) in their bank accts. An additional $30.2M will go toward community infrastructure such as health facilities, schools, & a clean water supply.. . . locals point out: The fishermen cant hope to return to fishing in the Bodo rivers & creeks because of the depth of hydrocarbon pollution resulting from the spills.
