Samurdhi Development Officers Union General Secretary, Chamara Madduma Kaluge said that they have received information that the money, so withdrawn from the Divi Neguma Development Fund, had been utilized by R.I.P.D. Bandula Tilakasiri, Additional Director General of the Divi Neguma Development Department to provide transport facilities to the old and disabled to travel to the polling stations on election day. The Samurdhi Development Officers Union charges that former Economic Affairs Minister, Basil Rajapaksa, Ministry Secretary, Dr. Nihal Jayatilleke, Director General, R.A.K. Ranawaka, Additional Director General, Bandula Thilakasiri and Accountant, R.M.M.G. Ratnayake are responsible for the illegal withdrawal of the money. Madduma Kaluge said, they will file charges against them at the Bribery Commission next week. He explained, This money has clearly been used for election propaganda work. All 14,040 Samurdhi Officers, throughout the country, have been paid Rs 2,000 each to provide transport facilities to voters. This is a grave misuse of public funds. We strongly demand that the Auditor General investigate this thoroughly to punish those responsible for financial misappropriation.
