Ruby Collins Gates, 88, passed away on March 21, 2014 in Austin. Born in Nacogdoches on October 18, 1925, Ruby graduated from Douglass High School, moved to Texas City, and met and married Edward Gates where they raised their family of three daughters. She retired from Danforth Hospital after 20 years of service, and she and Ed moved to Wimberley, Lufkin, and then to San Marcos. Ruby was an accomplished “Texas” cook. She loved being social, playing dominoes, shopping, traveling, and visiting her friends and family. She made everyone feel part of the family. With her welcoming heart, she volunteered at Hospice/Elliot House for years. She found comfort in her faith and attended the Baptist church wherever she lived. Ruby is survived by her husband of 67 years, Ed, and daughters Janet Brennan and Joyce Gates of Austin, Doris Frazier and husband Bob of Sacramento CA, and granddaughter Leanna Kerr and husband David and son Logan of Breckenridge, CO. Memorial services will be at graveside in Alazan Cemetery, March 25 at Noon. Visitation is at Laird Funeral Home in Nacogdoches from 5-7pm on March 24. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Hospice/Joe W. Elliott House, 220 Gene Samford Dr., Lufkin, TX 75900.
