Ruddy Duck While sitting at the pond last night posting the night heron, I watched a couple of feisty Ruddy Ducks fight for territory in the small pond. Ruddy Ducks are just the cutest little ducks. They may be the smallest duck in the pond, but they sure dont know it. They are full of machismo, energy and aggression. They will charge each other, a larger bird or anything they think is encroaching on their territory. They will puff up their chest, generating bubbles in front of them. I guess it must make them look bigger. They also race across water, looking almost like a hydrofoil. And then there is the blue bill. They only have this during breeding season, but thats okay. I have heard that the Daffy Duck cartoon character was fashioned after a Ruddy, and having grown up with Daffy, I think they did a very good job.
