Rugby Update 6 August 2014 Congratulations to the Kia Toa Women’s Rugby Team 2014 Club Champions Well done!!!! Kia Toa Women’s rounded off the season with a hard fought win over a very competitive Eketahuna, eventually winning 21-12. With this victory, Kia Toa finished off a very successful season, taking the Prue Christie Cup and the title of Manawatu champions for 2014. The game started off the wrong foot with a wayward pass, allowing Eketahuna to pounce on the loose ball and take a 7-0 lead. Trying conditions meant that the game remained tight, and after sustained pressure XX went over and with a tricky conversion from Crystal Mayes, the score was locked at 7-7. Eketahuna bounced back right on halftime, crossing for a try to make the score 12-7 at the break. In the process of conceding the try, Kia Toa lost two key forwards in Mahalia Polson and Raewyn Gregory-Hunt for the rest of the match. Kia Toa came out stronger in the second half with surging runs up the middle from Elza Wilson, Nicci Kuiti and Nicky Evans allowing Kias to maintain a territorial advantage throughout. Once again this created space out wide for wingers Juanita Trow and Rebekah Cordero-Tufuga to cause havoc out wide. Constant pressure allowed Kia Toa to cross again to make the scores 14-12 to Kias. With Whanda Leota running the show from first five, the second half pressure eventually showed as Crystal Mayes crossed for an outstanding try to take the score to 21-12. This remained until the end, meaning that after having to pull out of last year’s competition, they were once again Manawatu Women’s champions. Steve’s Tyre Service Player of the Day: 3. Whanda Leota Presidents vs Freyberg , Bill Brown Park 2.45 pm The President’s hosted Freyberg at Bill Brown Park in our second round fixture – the first round game was a narrow win to Kia’s so we expected another close run affair. We again had good numbers however it appeared Freyberg had almost brought a spare team for the sideline (their B’s had pulled out of their comp earlier in the season). The Freyberg game plan seemed to centre around using their big men close off the rucks & mauls and as battering rams in the midfield – with a combination of the wet weather impacting their handling and one of our best defensive halves of the season, we were able to nullify their attacks… further, we took our opportunities in counter-attack to come away with tries to Lenny and Stew for a half-time lead of 12-0. The second half was taking a similar pattern until a few unforced errors, Frey’s gathering a head of steam, and our discipline dropping, saw Freyberg hit back with two tries to close the gap to 12-10 with less than 5 minutes to go. Rather than just trying to hold on for the win, we retained possession, pushed up field through numerous phases and capped off the match with a final try to Manefou for a 19-10 win. Currently they now sit second in Premier 3. What twists and turns have taken place in the Senior Second A grade. The Kia Toa A2, Masters and Allsorts all play in this grade. After the weekend just gone Allsorts had a win against Bunnythorpe Inspire 32 – 19, whilst Masters lost to Red Sox Relics 29 – 41. So now the Allsorts lead the grade with the old girls coming second. The A2 team also had a loss however fought hard however the result against COG Masters was a loss 25 – 30 so now they sit 6th in the grade. Kia Toa Chasers had another win against Massey B1, the score 33 – 23. So now they are placed second in the Senior Second B grade. The Cougars had another win against Red Sox Synergy 44 – 30 and now sit 4th in the Senior Reserve A1 grade. It now seems they have a team every week and are settled. The Social team had a draw against Massey Green 28 all. Which is a great result as it now puts the social team in 6th position in the Senior Reserve A2 round. A great game as when I reviewed the points the Massey Green team are currently 3rd after the draw so well played Social girls. Well done teams :)
