Ruminating on Likes--I honestly have never put up a status on FB and thought to myself Hmmm--I wonder how many likes Im gonna get on THIS one! ...but likes have taught me something that is valuable info... Through likes Ive learned the type of thing that people (seem to) enjoy--personal stories, with pics... There have been times when I KNOW IVE GOT THE THOUGHT THATS GONNA CHANGE THE WORLD!!!--something political that feels wise and incisive and, well, world-changing...and I put it up and it gets 6 likes...now, truthfully, I dont feel deflated, I just think--gee, dont people know quality when they see it? hey, arent these people INVOLVED??? oh, I know, I put it up at a weird time of day--nobody saw it... ...and then I put up a news item about my daughter Gemini and that Im going to visit her in Wales and the like-o-meter goes ballistic...Gem pointed out to me that she and I both put up a pic of her and me on our road trip 2 summers ago--its a joyous pic, dad and kid having an elated time together, out on the road, free and so on, and she mentioned to me that the pic was put up THREE different times and each time it got over 80 likes--its not a contest, we realize that, but its evidence of connection and others feeling a sense of the same joy that we felt--thats meaningful as hell to me--people LOVE connection--maybe that pic reminds them of a moment in time with their own dad, or maybe its just smiling, or maybe the freedom of the road--SOMETHING...and I feel the same thing when I like a status that somebody has put up because it meant something to them... You dont really give a shit about my left-wing leanings or rantings...but we love sharing each others joy, or pain, or triumph, or loss that were willing to put out there. We all know each other a little bit better each time we put up something thats meaningful...and I must say, I like that :v
