Ruminations and Reflections Friday, July 18th “On Holiness and a Sanctified Oven” Since cooking some burgers in the oven recently, I’ve noticed smoke coming out of the oven door when it’s turned on. A closer investigation (I opened the door and looked inside) revealed the cause – some grease had splattered out of the pan and onto the bottom of the oven, causing it to smoke when it got hot. So it was off to Walmart to get some “Easy Off” Oven Cleaner, a pair of long yellow “Playtex” disposable gloves and one sponge. Armed and ready, I sprayed, waited, then got down on my knees and scrubbed. After several sweeps inside the oven, and multiple blackened paper towels, the oven was clean – sparkling clean. I was so impressed with the results that I couldn’t resist opening the door of the oven a few hours later as I was walking through the kitchen, just to admire the shine! I’m thinking a lot about holiness these days, about my desire for a clean heart, for a heart fully renewed after the image of God, for a heart informed by the mind of Christ, for a heart filled with love of God and love of neighbor, for a heart that is continually bearing the fruit of an authentic life of faith, continually growing in grace. I want the grease-like sin wiped clean from my heart. In the words of Charles Wesley, I want my heart to be “pure and spotless”, I want God to finish God’s new creation in me, I want to see God’s “great salvation perfectly restored in me.” * Such a work will ultimately be of God. So today I will pray to grow in grace toward a life of holiness and true righteousness. And while I wait for God’s gift of Sanctification…… …..I’ll just get on my knees and keep scrubbing! Blessings, Pastor Randy Rock grove UMC *”Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”
