Ruminations and Reflections March 17, 2014 Season of Lent – Day 11 “Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me, Christ in the eye that sees me, Christ in the ear that hears me. “I arise today through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity, through a belief in the Threeness, through a confession of the Oneness of the Creator of creation.” from “the Prayer of Saint Patrick” Saint Patrick was kidnapped at 16 and taken to Ireland. After caring for animals for several years he escaped, but returned later in life as a bishop in the Church. He is credited with being “the great Apostle” to Ireland. Though other missionaries perhaps preceded him, he is generally regarded as the one who brought Christianity to Ireland. He also got credit for running out a few snakes, I’m told. The above quote is a portion of what is referred to as “The Breastplate of Saint Patrick”, or “The Cry of the Deer”, and is attributed to Patrick, though some would suggest it was probably written much later. In any case, I think this portion of the prayer provides an awfully good focus to start the day! So, say a prayer, slap on some green and continue your Lenten Journey toward holiness and righteousness. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Lord willing, we will visit again tomorrow. Blessings, Pastor Randy Rock grove UMC
