Rundu robbery involves security firm Edson Haufiku Wednesday, April 30, 2014 - 08:00 The Kavango West and East Regional Police Commander expressed concern over the increase in criminal activities involving security companies in the two regions, after police arrested a fourth suspect in the robbery of over a million dollars from a bank at Rundu on Tuesday. Commissioner Olavi Auanga was speaking in the aftermath of the recovery of N$1,06 million of the N$1,08 million stolen from the First National Bank (FNB) branch at the town. He said the latest incident vindicates police suspicions that many security personnel, including some security company owners are aiding thieves to steal from the premises they guard. “We know that a lot of crimes occurring in the region happen with the knowledge and even assistance of the security guards,” Auanga said. “There is no way that somebody can cut the roof of a building, while the place is being guarded. We know of your activities and we will not leave any stones unturned as there is no room for crime in Kavango West and East,” he added. Auanga confirmed that a male suspect was arrested with the loot at a house 30kms east of Rundu on the day of the robbery. Police suspicion is that the suspect together with two guards and a senior employee of the Mpungu Security Firm, a company tasked with the distribution of money to several ATMs at the town on behalf of FNB, worked in cahoots to execute the robbery minutes after the bank opened. The two guards aged between 26 and 30 reportedly told police that an unknown man forced them at gunpoint into the only lift at the Galaxy Shopping Mall with the N1,08 million they had just collected from the bank. The single thief reportedly ordered them into their own vehicle before speeding off to an awaiting silver Audi sedan at the edge of town that was used as the getaway vehicle. Good police work and confessions from the two guards led to the arrest of the other two suspects. All four are expected to make their first appearance in the Rundu Magistrates’ Court today on charges of robbery.
