Running is a game of ground reaction. The ground will give back only what you provide it...Isaac Newtons law of action reaction. Most runners dont think of the pushoff from the ground as much. Building strength in each individual leg will not only help you prevent injuries, but also give you that power needed on the push off the ground. More power output=longer stride = faster YOU. Implement lunges, step up, single legged squats, single legged forward/lateral hops and other hip focused movements.
