Running out of time for leaf pickup/drop off AGAWAM, Mass. - TopicsExpress

Running out of time for leaf pickup/drop off AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – Some more mild weather made for a great day to rake the leaves on Wednesday. Some communities limit curbside leaf pickup, which might makes it more difficult to get rid of all the leaves dropping so late this year. Normally this time of year, the leaf drop off at Bondi’s Island is winding down as most people would have disposed of their leaves by now. But demand for curbside pickup and yard waste drop-off is peaking because leaves are still falling. “We have seen the yard waste collection spike later in the year as opposed to perhaps in mid October where we would generally see the spike, we are seeing it now and it’s significant,” said Greg Superneau from Springfield’s Department of Public Works’ Solid Waste Management. As some communities look to end their leaf pickup over the next few weeks, you’re running out of time to rake up the leaves and dispose of them. “There’s still some places that have nice maple trees that have a lot of leaves and some many oaks, so they’ll be in trouble stacking the bags up until next spring somewhere,” said John Radner from Agawam. But even as curbside leaf pickup ends, you have other options. Springfield, Northampton and Holyoke could extend their leaf disposal programs if there’s demand for it. Residents in Springfield and Agawam (by permit) can bring their yard waste and bags of leaves to Bondi’s Island compost site in Agawam, even after the last yard waste pickup. However, the firmest deadline is the one set by mother nature. “I’ll just do it as long as I can. Snow’s the thing that stops me,” said Peter Coquette from Springfield. If you have questions about leaf disposal, you should call your DPW. 22News contacted some area DPW’s regarding their leaf disposal programs. The Agawam DPW won’t be extending their leaf pickup, which ends the last week of November. However, you can head to their office on 1000 Suffield Street to get a permit to drop off leaves at Bondi’s Island. The City of Chicopee will continue their leaf pickup every other week throughout the year. Holyoke will continue leaf pickup until at least the first snow covering. However if there is significant yard waste bags that remain, they may pick up after that first snow. Otherwise there’s a drop off location at the waste treatment plant on Berkshire Street. In Northampton there is no curbside leaf pickup, but you can drop off leaves on Glendale Road at Gate 2 through November 22nd, or at the Glendale Road Transfer Station through December 1st. That date could be pushed back if there is significant demand for it. The Greenfield DPW told 22News that this is the last Friday for curbside leaf pickup, but they offer year round dropoff at the Transfer Station at 89 Cumberland Road.
