Same goes for the nearest shopping mall. And the closest choked commute. That’s exactly why retired Navy Chief Dave Beth, retired Army Sgt. Nate Lutrell and retired Army Specialist Carl Brownfield have all fled here — along with, according to U.S. census figures, an astonishing number of other military veterans. So many, in fact, that Esmeralda County — a mile-high sprawl of scrubby hills and rustic cabins 260 miles south of Reno — contains the highest concentration of veterans per capita of any county in the Western United States: 28 percent.
