Rush (Full Review) Director: Ron Howard Cast: Daniel Bruhl … Niki Lauda Chris Hemsworth … James Hunt Olivia Wilde … Suzy Miller Alexandra Maria Lara … Marlene Knaus Pierfrancesco Favino … Clay Regazzoni ****1/2 out of ***** In what is easily Ron Howard’s best film since 2001’s “A Beautiful Mind”, co-leads Daniel Bruhl and Chris Hemsworth take the audience on an adventure thrill-ride we’re not soon to forget. Screenwriter and dramatist Peter Morgan’s (2008’s “Frost/Nixon”) script is grand in scale as it covers not only the bitter rivalry between race car drivers Niki Lauda and James Hunt, but also the 1976 Formula One season and the fateful race of the German Grand Prix. This isn’t to say that Morgan’s script wanders. It remains steadily focused on these two daredevils’ lives and the risks that are at stake. Daniel Bruhl, a German actor known to U.S. audiences as Frederik Zoller, a war hero, in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds”, is a standout as Niki Lauda. He’s the sensitive loner to Hemsworth’s James Hunt. Hunt is recognized by the media almost as much for his swagger as he is for his driving abilities. These two actors are in top form as once bitter rivals who form an unlikely bond of faith in each other as time progresses. The photography, provided by frequent Danny Boyle-collaborator Anthony Dod Mantle, is crisp and breathtaking even though the racing scenes do not rack up the tension as often as one would hope. This is one of the year’s best in film and is the most elegantly directed car racing film I have ever seen.
