Rushdie is undoubtedly right in describing religion as being a medieval form of unreason. If this can easily be applied to even the most innocent forms of religious belief or, even, knowledge, it fits much more what religion has been and is being transformed into. However it is dubious whether the attacks against Charlie Hebdo are to be attributed to religious terrorists or fundamentalists, following the meaning routinely associated with these concepts, however much a few fanatics would have gladly liked to bomb Charlie Hebdo out of existence. They look much more like a provocation aimed at bringing the French to adhere more closely to the war on terror, of which Pilger has already said that its a fake, and to keep adopting a policy of hostility, if not of aggression, against Russia.
