Russia is passing legislation that many Islamist activists are labeling “Islamophobic.” Authorities have begun vigorously searching Islamic schools for radical jihadist literature, and stopping veiled Muslim women to interrogate them. While Muslim sympathizers cry that they targeted treatment is discrimination in the least, many Russians believe the government has good reason to keep an eye on Islamists. Many don’t know it, but Russia also shares a tragic September date, similar to the 9/11 terrorist attacks the U.S. suffered. For Russia, September 1 marks a decade since one of the most horrifying terrorist attacks the country has ever experienced. In 2004, the Beslan school siege saw 334 people killed, 186 of them children. This bloodiest terrorist attack in Russian history also left 810 people injured. What happened that day is still fresh in locals’ memories:
