Russia to Build Nuclear Plants in Iran BY GEOFFREY NORMAN The FT reports that: Meeting in Moscow on Tuesday, Iranian and Russian officials said they had negotiated terms for the construction by Russia’s state nuclear power company Rosatom of four new reactors at the Islamic republic’s existing Russian-built Bushehr facility, and four more at another site in the country. Mr. Putin’s Russia seems to be looking for opportunities to make things difficult for the U.S. Which this development certainly does. Especially with the Russians saying they intend to: “… co-operate in the field of nuclear fuel cycle and ecology” with Tehran and will “[discuss] the issue of economic expediency and feasibility of fabricating fuel rod components in Iran, which will be used at these power units”. This: … has set alarm bells ringing among some Western diplomats. Any bilateral deal that allows Iran to continue an indigenous uranium enrichment programme could jeopardise the entire P5+1 talks. Those talks are, of course, aimed at limiting Iran’s ability to enrich uranium in exchange for ending economic sanctions. If there is a deal with the Russians that enables Iran to provide its own fuel for the nuclear plants, then: ...it’s not going to boost the chances for a deal, it’s going to destroy them,” said one western diplomat.
