Russian Spirit of Hollywood Profile. Actress, model and musician Milla Jovovich was born in Kiev, in 1975. Her father came from Montenegro, while her mother is a Soviet actress Galina Loginova. In 1979, the family moved to the USA. At the age of 9, Milla became a model and continued catwalk career with Banana Republic, Christian Dior, Donna Karan, and Versace. In 1988, she had her first professional acting role in the TV-film “The Night Train to Kathmandu”, and later that year, she appeared in her first feature film, “Two Moon Junction”. The key movie in her career was “The Fifth Element”, where Jovovich acted alongside Bruce Willis and Gary Oldman. In addition to her modeling and acting career, Jovovich released a music album, “The Divine Comedy”, in 1994. To the question about her Russian roots she usually responds: ‘I owe that strength of will, which only my origin could provide me with’. Top-model, actress, singer and fashion designer, Milla Jovovich is proud of her Russian origin. Over 30 years have passed from the moment, when at the age of 5 she left the USSR and moved to the USA together with her parents. She feels happy every single time she visits Moscow. Last time, she came there to present the world premiere of the 5th “Resident Evil” movie, shot by her husband Paul Anderson. During the presentation they both were answering numerous questions about the movie, their life and career. – Milla, you’re a world celebrity. Do you consider yourself stylish? – Right before the world press-tour with the “resident Evil”, my friends, designers, selected some clothes for me, and I chose the gowns to my taste. It took us 5 suitcases to pack all the clothes for me, my husband and daughter. Believe me, it’s not much. Yesterday we were in Tokyo, where the weather was hot and moist. Now we are in quite a chilly Moscow... and I need something less airy. If to speak about my style, I would treat it as ironical. I like to think about who I am. I want my style in clothes show my spirit, even if I keep silence. I want people see my jeans and understand my mood. To tell you the truth, women of my type usually choose clothes to be liked by other women. Let me explain (addressing Paul). Don’t be offended, honey, we need nothing to please a man: you just put on something with low neck, then you show long legs and this is enough. But it counts much more, when you rivet the eyes of another women! – You decided to take your daughter to the world tour? – She was in Tokyo with us. She was so excited that now she asks us to live there for a couple of months. We didn’t take her to Moscow, cause a 20-hours’ flight is too much for a kid. She followed me in Moscow during the shooting of the “Vykrutasy” movie. We had a bodyguard Sasha, who used to carry her in his arms, as a doll. She liked Russia very much. I read the Russian literature to her; she starts to speak Russian a little and she’ve already learnt some poetry. – Recently, you’ve performed your role in Russian, in the “Vykrutasy” movie. Four yaers later, as we know, Timur Bekmambetov asked you to play in his movie, but you rejected the offer. Why? – Then, I was really scared to perform in Russian. It seemed that I know not a single word in it. As well, it was a sequel of a very popular Russian movie; and I thought that the Russians would hate me, if I performed badly in it. By that time, my daughter hadn’t been born yet. Her birth changed me a lot. I became way more courageous. That is why I agreed to play in the “Vykrutasy”. This light comedy amazed me, as far as recently I’ve been invited to perform more in action movies. Though, during the shooting process, everybody was laughing, except me: I had to struggle with the Russian text. There were so many hard-to-spell words. And I had to learn pages of the Russian text and afterwards to perform as a matured and professional actress. This work was very exhausting, and I gave no permission to dub me into Russian. I told them: ‘After what I had to go through, how dare you think about dubbing me!’ (smiling). – Have you thought in playing in any Russian movie based on the Russian classics? – I’ve always thought of making a film about Anna Akhmatova. She was a very interesting woman, with a very interesting life story. I do love her poetry. But I don’t understand how to shoot such a movie in Hollywood. Or, let’s say, “Master and Margarita”. This is a genius novel. But how to translate the name Bezdomny into English? It’s impossible. complicated thing was to scream and run in horror away from zombies, who want to eat you. I’ve never thought that to imitate panic and to stay nervous in front of the camera would be such a difficult thing. – The “resident Evil” is rich in special effects. Was it difficult to be a part of a computer-modeled action? Paul: As a director I do love to work with Milla. She favors her profession and performs every single trick herself, despite bruises, scratches and blood. She is always ready to run and fall down. – Well, many actors would answer: ‘Yes, definitely!’ There are moments, of course, when you have to work in front of a green screen and imitate, how balls are falling on you, or the scene when zombies approach you. But I’ve got used to it. It’s way more difficult to play a victim, as far as I have nothing in common with this mask in real life. In new part of this movie, the most Milla: Honey, I help you to reduce costs. All the stuntmen cost too much (laughs). But Paul is right: I’m a great stayer and like to work hard. When I work, I forget about myself and even never feel hunger.
