Ruth Dudley Edwards really should know better than to write this than to churn out this illogical pap. No one denies that there are grains of truth in her article but, overall, its one big lie, holding Ireland up as salutary lesson for the Scots who seem to be on the verge of voting to leave the UK. As far as Im concerned, thats the business of the Scots though I would be inclined towards a Yes vote despite seeing the reasons why people would want to maintain the link. However Ireland (the 26 Counties) has had its struggle to become independent and challenges to overcome since then. It has done so better than could be expected despite being burdened with colonial baggage and a whole host of other problems. The process is far from complete - then again Ireland is partitioned and is itself incomplete. Ruth believes she can gain a few votes for no by pointing to Ireland in warning. I think Scots voters will see true her spin....and vote according to their own consciences. Better Ireland make its own mistakes than allow Westminster to make them for us - we dont have to be reminded that Westminister rule was hardly benign towards Ireland. An example of Ruths flawed logic, she writes: If Northern Irish sectarianism had sprung from the dispossession of Catholics by 17th-century Protestant planters, Scottish sectarianism came from too large and fast an influx of Irish Catholics in the 19th century. Does she not realise that these two historical processes are related - i.e. the latter springs from the former.....thus they have the same source.
