Ryans Milk Bar on Jonson St, next to Timperleys garage, with Anzac marchers going past possibly in late 1960s or early 1970s (my father, Jim Knight) is one of the flagbearers at the front. Probably the best milkshakes around at the time, made by the Ryan twin sisters - who seemed about 100 then but were probably only in their 50s. I longed for my 11th birthday as our family had an established tradition (or so I thought) that on that day the birthday person could take 3 of their friends to Ryans for a pies and milkshake lunch - only when it got to be my turn I was told the tradition was over. Perhaps we were too skint that year :) I remember the big carpet hanging on the rear wall near the kitchen, featuring camels and pyramids (I think). I wonder if this rug was an Anzac souvenir from WW1 - does anyone know more?
