S.A.B.A.L - A LETTER TO PARENTS - WHAT ARE WE DOING? 6 June 2011 at 09:20 Dear Parent, 6-6-2011 I have a very strong reason to write this letter to you. In spite of various meetings that we have had – there are still some issues which need to be settled. Either, because of `over excitement’ or because of `not being able to understand’ – the children are not able to communicate properly to you – AS TO WHAT WE ARE DOING. WHAT WE AGREE ON. We all agree that through regular sports the child will be able to build good health, develop personality and learn life-skills which are so essential in the modern day competitive world. However, the perceptions are different. The parents feel that `studies’ or `other family functions’ are ignored at the cost of SPORTS. The children want a `continuous joy’ through sports – and go over board. THE COACH, per se, can give good coaching to children who are regular. So, in order to meet everyone’s objective – there needs to be more dialogue and understanding. WHAT WE CAN DO. Let the parents specify, what specifically, are their objectives in putting their children for a sports programme. Studies, behaviour, family commitments and culture and a host of other issues may be involved. The children will then be made to participate in only those programmes which meet the norms established. THE COACH – then can plan and execute a methodology which is a WIN -WIN situation for every one. THE CRYING NEED TO FOCUS. Almost all parents make the mistake of EXPECTING their child to be A JACK OF ALL – AND A MASTER OF NONE. The availability of too many choices has created confusion. Most of the students slowly start feeling left out when they aren’t selected in the school teams. I have spent almost 30 years in teaching BASKETBALL and I have found this game is ideal for children between the age of 5-15 years. And almost all of my students are PASSIONATE about the game. But I also expect them to have a `balanced approach’ – and for that purpose I conduct many theory classes. WHY THIS LETTER. I think it is better that we understand what we are trying to do rather than just blaming the parent, or the child or the coach or the game. For that we must sit together and `fix’ the ground rules. It would then be easy for us to make a `student profile’. UNDERSTANDING THE CHILD - There are many parents who come to me – and issue – BLANKET PERMISSION. There are others who have given CONDITIONAL PERMISSION. I have problem with neither. Of course, I reserve the right to discuss with you – in the interest of the child; since I believe that you have given the child under my charge to become STRONG both mentally and physically. There are changes in your child – UNDERSTANDING THESE – is also your duty. I am normally available in my office between 6pm to 8pm – however, please phone before coming over. Theory class FRIDAY 6pm-8pm. Coaching SAT 3pm-6pm SUN 7am-10am. PUBLIC HOLIDAYS – timings will be informed. KINDLY BRING THIS LETTER WHEN YOU ARE VISITING ME.
