SA PEN, an autonomous branch of PEN International, has again been asked to select and submit two pieces from South African writers for entry into PEN Internationals New Voices Award. This Award will raise these writers’ profiles and entitle them to a shot at winning the $1,000 USD prize money. The winner of the 2013 New Voices Award was South African Masande Ntshanga. Hopefully we can repeat this success in 2014. SA PEN is thus seeking out the best and most exciting South African prose writers or poets, under the age of 30, to be entered into this prestigious international competition. SA PEN is approaching you because, in your work as an author / publisher / teacher in a creative writing programme, you or your colleagues might be in a position to nominate particularly gifted young writers. We thus invite you to nominate up to three candidates, who, on your recommendation, and if deemed eligible by SA PEN, will then be invited to submit a piece of work. A selection board, established by SA PEN, will then decide which two pieces of work will be submitted to PEN International. Please send the names and contact details of the writers that you would like to nominate to SA PEN Secretary at [email protected] by no later than Friday, 7th February 2014. Kindly note that PEN International will only accept entries from an accredited PEN Centre. Entries that come directly from candidates will not be accepted. Entry criteria: - proposed candidates must be South African citizens or permanent residents of South Africa - proposed candidates must be over 17 & still under the age of 30 at the time of the closing date (20th May 2013); - writers who have published books may not enter but those who have existing contracts with publishers for forthcoming books may enter; - writers who have published pamphlets work in magazines and journals are allowed to enter.
