SABC News: Pressure mounts on World Medical Association to expel Israeli Medical Association Thursday 9 October 2014 20:10 Mariza Breytenbach Cosatu compares Israels actions to apartheid incidents and wants the IMA to refute these actions(SABC) Cosatu and its health sector affiliates will embark on a protest outside the World Medical Association (WMA) in Durban on Friday. They call for the expulsion of the Israeli Medical Association from the WMA until Israel respects human rights. The protest will be joined by the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU), Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) and the South African Medical Association (SAMA). In 2005, Palestinians called on the international community to support a non-violent campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel and its companies until Israel complies with international law and respects human rights. The BDS campaign is also increasingly supported by (progressive) Israelis. National spokesperson of Cosatu, Patrick Craven, issued a statement on 9 October, which compares Israel’s actions to apartheid policies. It states, “In the spirit of international solidarity, moral consistency and resistance to injustice and oppression, we call on the World Medical Association to immediately expel the Israeli Medical Association from the WMA unless the IMA unequivocally condemns, distances and actively counter’s Israel’s torture, occupation and apartheid policies”. The protest will embark on Friday at 10:00 outside the International Convention Centre in Durban where the Wold Medical Association General Assembly is currently taking place. sabc.co.za/news/a/b5c9a10045c5596e9d5f9f90ca3f4715/Pressure-on-WMA-to-expel-Israeli-Medical-Association-20141009
