SABC’S 24 HOURS NEWS CHANNEL PREMATURE AND ELITIST, SAYS COPE - TopicsExpress

SABC’S 24 HOURS NEWS CHANNEL PREMATURE AND ELITIST, SAYS COPE It is regrettable that the SABC chose to launch a 24 hours news channel on pay TV which is out of reach for the vast majority of South African households. As a public broadcaster, it would be expected that it would launch such a service on a free to air channel. COPE believes that the resources required to launch and maintain this channel should have been used to improve the content and general standard of its free to air services. It remains to be seen whether coherent content can be found and produced to feed the insatiable appetite of such an around the clock news service. In order to honour its mandate as the public broadcaster, it is of paramount importance that human and financial resources are not diverted from the free to air services – including educational programmes – to boost this ambitious venture, that was branded some months ago as a vanity project by nobody less than the Finance Minister, Mr Pravin Gordhan.. All eyes will be on this 24 hour channel to ensure that it does not become an ANC propaganda channel now that the ruling party is at pains to demonstrate their version of service delivery in the run-up to the 2014 ELECTIONS.
