SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) —Heavy downpours fell on Sacramento-area drivers toward the end of Fridays morning commute. Steady showers will continue to fall in the region throughout the afternoon. Meanwhile, snow is going to be an issue for drivers heading up to the Sierra. Snowfall will begin to fall at the 5,000-foot mark, with snow showers through the early evening, according to First Alert Weather meteorologist Tamara Berg. KCRA 3 First Alert chief meteorologist Mark Finan said snow will fall in the Sierra as early as sunrise down to about the 5,000-foot elevation mark. At 10 a.m., chain controls were posted on some Sierra roadways, including Interstate 80. There were no chain controls posted on Highway 50. A moderate chilly breeze is also accompanying this weather system. As the day continues, snow levels will move up to about 6,000 feet. Higher elevations can expect about 3 to 8 inches of fresh powder. The Valley should dry out in the afternoon. However, some portions of San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties will see rain pushing through the region. Some Valley locations will see up to a half inch of rain. Temperatures in the Sierra will remain in the mid to upper 30s, while the Valley will reach the mid to upper 50s. In Sacramento, temperatures started off in the mid 50s. The weekend in Northern California looks dry and sunny with some clouds. Thick fog in the Valley may be an issue for the start of the work week, but no wet weather should be moving in anytime soon. kcra/weather/radar
